Welcome to Create Your BLANK — where I explore all the tools and tips for you and your journey in creating your BLANK.
Now… I don’t read a script. I have a couple of notes, so I go with my spirit and go with the flow. I hope you enjoy it!
Why Values Matter
I love this week’s vlog so much because it is about values: your secret ingredient to aligning your success.
In my book and in a previous blog, I talk about four areas that are crucial to integrating what you love and are good at, so you can align with whatever your BLANK is—especially in your career.
Those four areas are:
- Personality
- Skills
- Interests
- Values
I believe values are the most important because if you’re not aligned with your values, you’re ultimately not going to be happy or satisfied. You can sort of fake it with personality or interests. But values? Not so much.
How to Discover Your Core Values
I have a really cool core values exercise in my book Create Your BLANK, which you can preorder here 📘
Here’s where I like to start:
- Get a list of values.
You can use the one in my book or download the Values Checklist directly. Pick your top 10. - Define what each value means to you.
For example, if communication is important to you, what does that actually mean? Communication with family may look different from communication in a job. Get specific. - Rate each value by importance.
Use a 1–10 scale. Hopefully, all of them rank 7 or higher—otherwise, why are they in your top 10?
Sometimes values are flexible. For instance, if geographical location is important, and your ideal is 5 miles from home (a 10), maybe you’ll settle for 30 miles (a 7). Be honest with yourself when evaluating the ranking.
Using Your Values as a Decision-Making Tool
Now that you’ve defined and ranked your values…
Let’s say you’re choosing between three job offers. You can measure each job against your top 10 values.
- If communication is a value and Company A has been clear and responsive, maybe they’re a 10.
- If location is a value and the office is 50 miles away, maybe that’s a 4.
Once you rank all 10 values for each job, you total the scores. You get a more objective picture of which option aligns with YOU.
Here’s the thing: if your total score for a job is under 85 out of 100 and your total ranking for all values is 100, it might not be your best fit. You’re probably not honoring your values. So, you want to try to get as close to 100 as possible.
What If Your Values Conflict?
Sometimes your values will compete with each other. Say freedom and family time are both a 10 for you. But then you get offered a job that requires tons of travel. That’s going to conflict with your family time and your freedom.
And that’s when it feels hard. That’s when it is hard. So look at those moments and allow yourself to make judgements that are true to your values.
Values and Energy
When you’re aligned with your values, it feels like ease and flow.
When you’re not, it feels hard. You feel tired. It drains your physical energy. It affects your mind, body, and spirit. When things feel hard, you can look to see which value is being compromised
What’s Next?
In the next vlog, we’ll talk about Inspired Action—how you move forward once you know your values and align with them.
Thanks for watching! If you have questions, drop them in the comments. I’ll see you next time.
Have a beautiful day!
